Frequently Asked Questions

  • Yes, but a very limited amount. Our primary focus is Agave Yolo. We do have hijuelos of americana, espadin, and weber azul in small numbers.

We recommend getting these and other“heirloom” varieties commonly used in mezcals from other nurseries. A good list of registered commercial agave nurseries is on the California Agave Council website.

  • We recommend planting between April and September, earlier the better to get maximum growing time over the summer.

  • Costs vary, especially for the bulbils, depending on their size and number per tray. Generally, they will average between $3-5 per plant, while hijuelos may be $10-12 per plant (as of Jan 2026.)

Bulbils will typically take a year in the ground to catch up to a hijuelo in size. So the significant savings in costs for bulbils are offset to some degree by the cost of an additional year of field management.

If your budget is tight, bulbils make more sense. If you’re in a hurry, hijuelos. Maybe you’ll want to try some of both.

  • Yes.

One of the biggest advantages of planting bulbil plugs is the cost saving of mechanical planting, especially for larger acreage, 10 acres or more. This eliminates significant labor costs of mapping and marking out the spacing and manual planting.

  • A quick ballpark number is 1,000. All depends on the spacing which takes into account your site, equipment, and personal preference.

We like 4 x 12 spacing which provides ample room for mowing equipment and results in 908 plants per acre. 4 x 10 = 1,089 and so on.

In Mexico, traditional spacing for tequilana is 1 meter by 3 meters. Here’s a good calculator to determine spacing: The Spacing Calculator.
